Smart Watches and Cell Phone Use at School

Smartwatches, including those meant for kids, that can make phone calls, text, or get on the internet are not allowed to be used during school hours.  These devices are treated like cell phones. As stated in the Student Handbook, students will keep these devices always turned off and, in their backpacks, while on campus. They can only use cell phones or smart watches before or after school when outside the blue gates at the front of the school. We have seen more students using these watches during class creating a distraction to the learning environment.  If you have any questions, please contact Principal Hightower or Associate Principal Salas.

Important Survey Coming Via Mail

Impact Aid Funds are designated to assist school districts that lose tax revenue due to their enrollment of students from families who live or work on tax-exempt federal properties or are active-duty military personnel. Hancock is heavily impacted with federally connected students. Due to this, Impact Aid funds become an important part of our budget to support instructional activities for all students. To qualify for Impact Aid funding, the U.S. Department of Education requires us to survey each student to determine eligibility. Therefore, we ask all parents to complete the survey every year to help us qualify. This year, the Impact Aid Survey will be coming to you through the United States Postal Service on or after October 5th and will include a prepaid return envelope.  Please watch for this letter and return the survey in the provided envelope right away.

School Accountability Report Card

Public schools throughout California are required to provide information about themselves to the community in the form of an annual School Accountability Report Card (SARC). These report cards provide a variety of data to allow the public to evaluate and compare schools in several important areas:

demographic information

school safety and climate for learning

academic data

class size

teacher and staff information

professional development

fiscal and expenditure data

The SARC, which follows the state's guidelines and document template, are issued each spring and focus on the previous academic year. A SARC is typically 12- 14 pages long. I have attached an electronic copy of our site’s SARC for the 2020-21 school year. Hard copies of our SARC are also available in the main office. The 2020-21 SARC is available at https://www.sarconline.org/. You can also access our current SARC electronically at: Hancock SARC 2020-21

Optional Weekly COVID-19 Testing

Weekly Covid Testing has resumed at all school sites and central office sites. Hancock testing is on Mondays from 8-11 a.m.  Consents to test from the 21/22 school year have now expired and if you wish to sign your student up for the 22/23 school year, you must do it through Primary Health. Please use the Testing Sign Up  link. Parent volunteers at Hancock who are not vaccinated against COVID-19 can also opt for weekly testing by using this same link and registering as a staff member. For student weekly testing, students that are signed up will be escorted class by class to our testing location. Parents will be able to view test results online.

Students Absent With COVID-like symptoms

As we settle into the school year, it’s important that everyone stay vigilant when it comes to preventing the spread of COVID-19. To ensure that everyone in our school communities stay healthy, please follow the guidelines set forth by our district and county public health. Keep your child home when they’re sick.  If your student has any COVID-like symptoms (see list), please keep them home until the symptoms have improved and a negative COVID-19 test result has been achieved.  If your student tests positive for COVID-19, please complete the Reporting Tool: https://sforce.co/3HOD3ZL If you have any questions about when and what is required for your student to return to school, please contact our health office at 619-605-3200, Option 3.  If each of us makes an effort, we can help prevent the spread of this virus.

Parents Needed for Two Important Committees:

Parents, we need your help!  We have two very important committees at Hancock that require parent participation.  The Site Governance Team (SGT) helps to provide feedback and make recommendations on school programs.  The School Site Council (SSC) helps decide how to spend state and federal funds on programs and items we have at Hancock. Both committees meet on separate Mondays at 2:30 and we are currently meeting on Zoom for both committees.  The SGT is in need of TWO parent volunteers and the SSC is in need of FIVE parent volunteers. The self nomination form links are below and parents may self nominate for one or both committees:
