Character Education at Hancock

Students at Hancock participate in a school-wide focus of one pillar of Good Character each month.  Each of the color-coordinated pillars are used within our character education program to help instill a positive school climate and a culture of kindness, making schools a safe environment for students to learn. We encourage our families to extend the program to discussions and activities at home as well because the more students hear about good character, the more important it will be!

TRUSTWORTHINESS is the pillar of character we are focused on for the month of September. Being honest, being reliable, telling the truth, and keeping promises are important choices we make every day to be trustworthy people. Talk to your kids about what you trust them with, how they can trust you, and why trustworthiness is such a valuable pillar for building good character!

Illness Absences During the COVID Pandemic

Due to COVID related protocols given to us by the District, all absences must be reported to the front office. It is critical that we hear from you the reason your student is staying home from school. If you do not report the reason for the absence, your student will not be allowed to return to class. Please be sure to communicate directly to our office instead of to the teacher. We need to know the specifics, please!  To report your student’s absence:

  • Call 619-605-3200 any time of the day and press “1” at the menu to get the attendance desk. If you leave a voicemail be clear with the student name, teacher name and specifics about why they are absent. Please also leave your name and phone number so that our health office can follow up if needed; OR
  • Use our online Google Doc and report the absence digitally. The link can always be found at the bottom of every Hancock Happenings or prominently on our website look for the “Report Absence” button. Link to Absence Report Google Doc

After an illness related absence, the guidelines for your student to return are as follows:

  • Improvement in symptoms
  • 24 hours fever free without the help of fever reducing medication
  • Negative PCR test (please note: rapid/antigen tests are not accepted) - please present the result to our health office (bvaldez@sandi.net) before sending your student back to school

Keep our State Funding and Free Lunches!

Hancock receives a large amount of Title I and Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) funds from the state (over $280,000). This is how we pay for supplies, intervention teachers, our librarian, our counselor and attendance clerk. We also receive free lunch because families submit information on this short LCFF questionnaire (2 questions and an electronic signature).

Please help keep this funding and free lunch at our school for next year by signing into Parent Portal:  https://powerschool.sandi.net/ and completing the questionnaire.  Look for the LCFF Data Collection icon near the bottom of the page.  Please note - this cannot be completed on a phone and you must be in the Parent Portal not the Student Portal.  If you have not set up a Parent Portal Account and need your students’ Access ID and Password, please contact our front office or email dvanboxtel@sand.net.

See this link for detailed instructions on how to enter and what will be asked. Please know this information is private and will not be shared for any other purpose.

Parent Teacher Foundation (PTF) News

PTF stands for "Parent Teacher Foundation" and is a 501c3 non-profit organization that raises funds for programs and activities at Hancock for all of our students. This parent, teacher and staff combined group meets monthly to review goals, budget and upcoming events. All parents are encouraged to become involved!

  • “Opt-out” Fundraiser - Students were given forms for this “opt-out” fundraiser during the past week. This fundraiser is in hopes of avoiding selling stuff door-to-door, collecting money, and distributing products later in the year. Note: we understand not all families are in a position to donate/fundraise at this time. This is completely optional and only intended to give families the opportunity to make donations if they so desire.
  • Spirit Gear Sales - Thank you to all our families who have placed an order for tshirt, long sleeves or sweatshirts. If we have the size, the shirts will be given to your child’s teacher by Monday. If you did not receive your items it means we had to order them. The orders will arrive in approximately 3 weeks.Thank you for showing your Hancock spirit.

When the order arrives we will have a limited amount of t-shirts left over for sale.  We will have another presale order in December for sweatshirts and long sleeved shirts.

  • Upcoming Meetings - The next meeting is Oct 5th via Zoom.

Symptomatic COVID-19 Testing Options

Thank you for your continued patience and cooperation in keeping our campus a safe place for students and staff. Students who are sent home or asked to stay home with any symptoms that could be COVID related are only able to return to school if a negative PCR COVID-19 test result is provided to our health office, or if the student quarantines for 10 days. We understand that symptomatic testing options can be limited, but students can utilize free PCR testing at drive-up centers at the District’s comprehensive high schools .To schedule an appointment at one of these high school locations, visit the district’s SDUSD COVID Status Webpage. Click on the COVID-19 Testing link and look for Symptomatic Testing.
