Illness Absences During the COVID Pandemic

Due to COVID related protocols given to us by the District, all absences must be reported to the front office. It is critical that we hear from you the reason your student is staying home from school. If you do not report the reason for the absence, your student will not be allowed to return to class. Please be sure to communicate directly to our office instead of to the teacher. We need to know the specifics, please!  There are several ways to report your student’s absence:

  • Call 619-605-3200 any time of the day and press “1” at the menu to get the attendance desk. If you leave a voicemail be clear with the student name, teacher name and specifics about why they are absent. Please also leave your name and phone number so that our health office can follow up if needed.
  • Use our online Google Doc and report the absence digitally. The link can always be found at the bottom of every Hancock Happenings or prominently on our website look for the “Report Absence” button. Link to Absence Report Google Doc

After an illness related absence, the guidelines for your student to return are as follows:

  • Improvement in symptoms
  • 24 hours fever free without the help of fever reducing medication
  • Negative PCR test (please note: rapid/antigen tests are not accepted) - please present the result to our health office (bvaldez@sandi.net) before sending your student back to school

Keep our Funding and Free Lunches!

Hancock receives a large amount of Title I and Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) funds from the state (over $280,000). This is how we pay for supplies, intervention teachers, our librarian, our counselor and attendance clerk. We also receive free lunch because families submit information on this short LCFF questionnaire (2 questions and an electronic signature).

LCFF Data Collection:  Please see this link for detailed instructions on how to enter and what will be asked:   Instructions for Parent. Please know this information is private and will not be shared for any other purpose.

Please sign into Parent Portal:  https://powerschool.sandi.net/ and look for the LCFF Data Collection icon near the bottom of the page.  Please note - this cannot be completed on a phone and you must be in the Parent Portal not the Student Portal.  For help with technical issues, please contact Parent Online Support at 619.732.1400

Let’s keep our funding at the level our school deserves and our free lunch status for next school year!

Symptomatic COVID-19 Testing Options

Thank you for your continued patience and cooperation in keeping our campus a safe place for students and staff. Students who are sent home or asked to stay home with any symptoms that could be COVID related are only able to return to school if a negative PCR COVID-19 test result is provided to our health office, or if the student quarantines for 10 days. We understand that symptomatic testing options can be limited, but students can utilize free PCR testing at drive-up centers at the District’s comprehensive high schools .To schedule an appointment at one of these high school locations, visit the district’s SDUSD COVID Status Webpage. Click on the COVID-19 Testing link and look for Symptomatic Testing.

This is Not a Crosswalk

photo of speed bump

Please help ensure the safety of all of our students and lead by example the safe way to cross the busy street in front of our school.  This speed bump is not a crosswalk on the big hill coming up Taussig Street. Please do not cross here. The safest crossing is where Safety Patrol stops cars for pedestrians just above the driveway

Parents Needed for Two Important Committees:

Parents, we need your help!  We have two very important committees at Hancock that require parent participation. Without parent support the district could direct certain aspects of how our school is run and not by our own staff and parent community. The Site Governance Team (SGT) helps to provide feedback and make recommendations on school programs.  The School Site Council (SSC) helps decide how to spend state and federal funds on programs and items we have at Hancock. Both committees meet on separate Mondays at 2:30 and we are currently meeting on Zoom for both committees.  The SGT is in need of three parent volunteers and the SSC is in need of two parent volunteers. Please consider volunteering and keeping our decisions at the Hancock level. The self nomination form links are below and parents may self nominate for one or both committees:
