Happy New Year!

As we venture into the year 2022 the team of staff at Hancock are hopeful that although we may not be able to return to what we knew was “normal” we can go beyond and continue what we do best for our students and families.  The excerpt below from Amanda Gorman’s newest poem “New Day’s Lyric” says it best:

“This hope is our door, our portal.

Even if we never get back to normal,

Someday we can venture beyond it,

To leave the known and take the first steps.

So let us not return to what was normal,

But reach toward what is next.”

We look forward to serving our families the rest of the 2021-22 school year as we have always done in the best way we know how.

At-Home COVID Testing Kits

For families who chose to utilize the at-home test kits it is recommended that one test be given today, Dec. 31st, as well as the morning of January 3rd prior to coming to school.  If a positive or inconclusive test result is detected please obtain a PCR test to verify the results with your healthcare provider.  Your child will need to stay home until your results are verified and please use this google form to report your child’s absence.  If you have negative test results you do not need to report them to school.  Directions on how to use the kits can be found at the following link:  https://sandiegounified.org/covid-19_status/c_o_v_i_d-19_testing

IT IS NOT A REQUIREMENT TO USE THE AT-HOME COVID TEST KIT TO RETURN TO SCHOOL.  If your child is ill for any reason please follow regular procedures for illnesses which are stated below.

A Simple Way to Share COVID-19 Test Results

If your student has been tested for COVID-19 in order to return to school after an illness or close contact, please upload the test results on our new Google Form. This allows all of our office staff to access the results and makes it quicker to confirm students are cleared to return to school.  Upload Here

Illness Absences During the COVID Pandemic

Students who are sent home or asked to stay home with any symptoms that could be COVID related are only able to return to school if a negative PCR COVID-19 test result is provided to our health office, or if the student quarantines for 10 days. Students can utilize free PCR testing at drive-up centers at the District’s comprehensive high schools .To schedule an appointment at one of these high school locations, visit the district’s SDUSD COVID Status Webpage. Click on the COVID-19 Testing link and look for Symptomatic Testing.

After an illness related absence, the guidelines for your student to return are as follows:

  • Improvement in symptoms;
  • 24 hours fever free without the help of fever reducing medication; and
  • Negative PCR test (please note: rapid/antigen tests are not accepted) - please upload the test results to this Google Form or bring to the school front office before sending your student back to school. Students must get a green “cleared” pass from the front office before they can return to class.

Next Session of Core Academy Jan. 8

Does your student have absences to make up? Could he/she use some extra academic support?  Core Academy not only provides students with an opportunity to receive additional instruction in various core subject areas, but it also gives students the ability to make up one full day of absence and up to 4 tardies!. The instruction during these Saturday sessions is led by Hancock teachers.  The next session will be Saturday, January 8 from 8:00a to 12:00p. At this time, we will be offering this to students in grades 2-5 only. Spaces are limited. Additional sessions will be offered each month. To sign up, please use our Google Form.  Note that students will be provided a free breakfast snack during the session. Parents must pick students up promptly at noon.
