Week 1 - August 30 - September 3

Welcome to Hancock Elementary

The Hancock Staff and Parent Teacher Foundation (PTF) send out a huge welcome to all of our Hancock families whether you are new to our school or returning.  We are excited to have everyone on campus everyday and look forward to seeing everyone together for the first time in over a year!  We have all been working hard to ensure the campus is clean, safe, and welcoming for our students. Although this is coming in a special Saturday edition - every Sunday going forward you should be receiving a phone as well as email message of the Hancock Happenings - our school newsletter from Principal Hightower.  Please be sure we always have a current and correct phone number and email address that can receive these messages as well as emergency notifications and updates to our health guidance as we know this will be ongoing this year hopefully in a positive direction. Please read below for important information for the opening week of school.

Self Symptom Check

All families should use a symptom self check guide prior to getting ready to come to school.  There is a guide on page 12 of the Back to School Guide or you use the follow questions: 

  • Does your student have a new cough, shortness of breath or headache that cannot be attributed to another health condition?
  • After taking the temperature today, does your student have a temperature greater than 100.0F?
  • Does your student have any of the following symptoms: chills, repeated shaking with chills, muscle pain,runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or new loss of taste or smell?
  • Has your student come into close contact (within 6 feet, for longer than 15 minutes) with someone who has a laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis in the past 14 days?
  • Has a health care provider or public health official asked your student to quarantine?

If you have answered “No” to all above questions, your student is safe to enter campus today. If you have answered “Yes” to any of the above questions, please stay home and contact us immediately. Our Health Office staff will follow-up.

Getting to School Safely

Please review this wonderful video on how to arrive at school safely that was made by our PTF when we reopened school last year.  All of the rules still pertain to both car drop off/pick up as well as those walking to school.  It is less than 5 minutes to watch and will save everyone time and frustration as our new families learn to arrive and depart safely the Hancock way.  Click here:  Getting to school Safely

Classroom Placements

If you have not heard from your child’s teacher directly, classroom/teacher placements are posted in front of the school and will remain throughout the weekend. You can find your child’s name and teacher name/classroom on the posted lists. Please note that as enrollment increases/decreases there may be changes in the future that must occur due to class size requirements. No requests for changing classrooms will be considered until our enrollment stabilizes which can take up to a month.  If your child was not enrolled and you did not already hear from office staff or the school nurse as to why please call our office Monday, August 30th at 619-605-3200.

Back to School Guide

The district sent out multiple emails this past week that included an update of masks being worn outside as well as inside for the moment, unless they are eating. Once that guidance is lifted we will notify all families.  If you did not receive them you may find the links to the new Back to School Guide and Frequently Asked Questions.  The district will update these as guidance changes.

Breakfast, Snacks and Lunch

The district sent out information that Breakfast would be available on Monday, August 30th.  Please know that Hancock’s cafeteria staff did not receive that information and will not be prepared to serve any breakfast on Monday, August 30th.  Please provide breakfast for your child prior to coming to school.  Students may take home a breakfast each school day that will be for the next day.  All breakfasts and lunches from the cafeteria are free this school year.  Please let your child’s teacher know if your child will be bringing lunch from home or would like to try a school lunch so we may give the cafeteria accurate information to prepare those items. You may find the current lunch selections here:  Weekly School Lunch Schedule   Students will be provided time to eat a snack.  We ask that all snacks be healthy choices that can be consumed in a short period of time so there is also time to play. Teachers may also be aware of students who have specific dietary restrictions or allergies that could affect the class so please check with your child’s teacher if certain foods should not be brought to school. 

Entrance and Exits

Currently health and safety guidelines do not allow parents onto campus at this time.  Once that is lifted we will be the first to let you know!  We miss having our parents help in the mornings on campus.

For day one all TK/ Kindergarten students will meet on the colored dots in front of school:

Mrs. Nannini = Orange, Ms. Jacobs = Black, Mr. Le = White, Mrs. Cimins = Green, Mrs. A. Gonzalez = Blue, Mrs. Nguyen = Yellow

Students in grades 1st - 5th were given directions on where to line up during the Meet & Greet or via information provided through a Dojo or email message.  Even if you did not receive any information every staff member not who is not a classroom teacher will be on campus to assist students with finding their teacher. We have done this multiple times when school reopened last Spring as well as during Summer School.  We will get every child in class please do not worry. 

For Day 1 we would like all students to use the front gates to enter and exit the campus.  Starting on Day 2 we will open the gates towards the back of the school near the 700 building that leads to Hooper Street behind the school as well as the gates near the 400 building that leads to Taussig Court.  Again we ask all adults to please not enter the back or side gates so we stay within the health and safety guidelines.

Parent Teacher Foundation (PTF) Updates

  • Chalk the Walk - Come this Saturday or Sunday anytime, bring your own chalk and write or draw a positive message on the school sidewalk. Remember to social distance and not draw on any of the spray painted dots. Those are markers for children to know where to stand. Check the Hancock PTF Facebook Page for more directions.

More Information Coming

In the coming days there will be information regarding the opportunity to opt in or out of student COVID testing, the collection of Local Control Funding Formula information so we may remain in free lunch status, how to enroll in PowerSchool Parent Portal to complete some of this upcoming items online, as well as Back to School Night information.  Please check your email frequently and each Sunday for the Hancock Happenings. 

Need to Report an Absence?

If your child will be absent from school, please be sure to report your absence to the office, not just your teacher.  You may report the absence using this google form or you may also call our phone line at 619-605-3200 and press 1 for attendance to leave a message.  Please be specific in your reason.
