School Holiday

All district schools will be closed for Presidents Day Weekend starting on Friday, February 17th through Monday, February 20th.  School will resume on Tuesday, February 21st.

Hancock Awarded Purple Star School Designation

We are so proud to have been recently recognized as a school to receive the California Purple Star School Designation. The Purple Star Program was designed to help mitigate the challenges of high mobility by setting standards for and publicly designating military-friendly schools. The Purple Star Program’s true value derives from its potential to:

  • Centralize and make knowledge accessible,

  •  Develop stakeholder networks, and

  •  Support schools in cultivating and communicating cultural competency in supporting military-connected families

The program signals which schools are the most committed and best equipped to meet the unique needs of military students and families and Hancock was recently named for the 2022-2023 school year.

Attendance Matters

San Diego Unified has begun sending monthly reports to families regarding attendance. The next letter will be sent electronically by the district on February 20th.  You may already have seen the first of these automated reports, which will inform you of student absences, both Excused and Unexcused absences to date and help track Chronic Absenteeism. Chronic absence is defined as missing 10 percent or more of school days due to absence for any reason—excused and unexcused absences. This can translate into students having difficulty learning to read by the third-grade, achieving in middle school, and graduating from high school. If you need support around attendance, please reach out to our school counselor, Mrs. MacMaster

Budget for the 2023-24 School Year

All district schools will be reviewing and gathering input on next school year’s budget in the coming weeks. Principal Hightower will be sharing the Hancock budget and holding input meetings in person on the following dates/times:

Wednesday, February 22nd:  8:00AM, 2:30PM or 5:30PM

Friday, March 3rd at 8:00AM.

All input from staff, parents, and community members will be shared with our School Site Council who will vote on the site’s Title I funds on Monday, March 6th.

Saturday, Feb 25th will be the next Core Academy session at Hancock. If you do not have this information and still need to make a selection with your student, please reach out to their teacher or contact Mrs. Beeler in the front office. If the selection is not made by 2/16, the school will choose the elective schedule for the student.

All of the rules pertain to both car drop off/pick up as well as those walking to school.  It is less than 5 minutes to watch and will save everyone time and frustration as we arrive and depart safely the Hancock way.  Click here:  Getting to school Safely  Here is also a written version of how to use the drop off zone safely: Hancock Drop Off Directions.docx

Parking at and around Hancock

  • Please do not park on Brumby Street.  There are signs notifying you that there is no school parking allowed and residents have had difficulty parking in their own driveways due to cars blocking them.

  • Reserved Parking Spaces: The 8 parking spots facing the kindergarten playground and garden are reserved for school staff. Do not park in these spots even if it’s for a quick pick-up. We have staff that work various hours and these spots are reserved for them.

  • Handicapped Spaces: It is unlawful for any person to park any vehicle in a space designated for disabled persons unless the vehicle displays either a special identification license plate or a distinguishing placard per California Vehicle Code. San Diego Police and SDUSD School Police periodically patrol the parking lot and will cite vehicles parked illegally.
