Thank you to all families who attended Back to School Night on Thursday, August 20th. We had a great turnout and enjoyed having you in your student’s classroom to learn about their school routines and curriculum. We look forward to moving through this school year with you as partners in their education and experience here at Hancock!

🥕 Hancock Harvest Wednesdays Are Back! -8/26
Hancock Harvest food distributions are back! In partnership with Feeding San Diego and our amazing community volunteers, Hancock will offer FREE food distributions one to two times each month for 150 families on a first-come, first-served basis. Families can receive approximately 25 lbs. of food, including fresh produce. Please see the attached calendar for upcoming distribution dates, and don’t forget to bring a wagon or stroller to help carry your food home! - Scheduled Calendar

SDMFC- Military Resources- 8/28
San Diego Military Family Collaborative invites our military-connected community to their August convening, “Beyond the Uniform: Caring for Your Mind After Active Duty.” Join military organizations, service providers, service members, veterans, and families on Friday, August 28, from 10:00 AM–12:00 PM at National University, 9388 Lightwave Ave. Parking is free, and the event is open to everyone!

After School Enrichment Programs Starting Soon
Each year, Hancock partners with various companies that offer after school enrichment opportunities. Generally, these programs do charge a fee and registration is done directly with the vendors. Sessions are usually 8-10 weeks. Here is the information we have so far:
Soccer: 5-week session running Aug 26 - Sept 23 Flyer

How You Can Help Keep Kids Safe:

🛑 Follow Staff & Safety Patrol: Pay close attention to Hancock staff in reflective vests and safety patrol students. Their directions keep traffic moving safely.

🐢 Slow Down & Stay Alert: Put away mobile devices and drive at a crawl through the lot.

🪧 Obey Posted Signs: Pay attention to drop-off zones, crosswalks, and no-parking areas.

🚘 Stay In Your Vehicle: Never leave your vehicle unattended during our active drop-off and pick-up times. Only pick-up or drop-off students in the zone against the curb.
Before School Run Club Starts Mon 8/31🏃👟🎽
We are excited to announce that our before-school Run Club will be starting soon! No sign-ups are required, but students must follow the same behavior expectations as during the school day. Students must actively participate (run or walk) to be part of Run Club. Run Club (RC) will be a privilege that can be revoked if behavior is an issue. RC will meet every Monday and Tuesday from 7:25a to just before the first bell. Students who eat breakfast at school must eat first and then be dismissed from the cafeteria to RC. For students that do not eat breakfast at school, the small gate by our electronic marquee will be opened once at 7:25 to any students waiting to come in to run. Parents are welcome and encouraged to come run with their children. Extra hands managing lap cards and eyes supervising are definitely appreciated.
Egg Carton Donations Requested
Hancock’s Garden Chickens are starting to lay eggs! Our PTF is working with Ms. MyThanh to harvest the eggs and are in need of egg cartons. If you want to donate any you have over the next couple of weeks, there will be a collection box in the Hancock Office.
❤️Deployment Support Group - Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic
Spouses/Partners Navigating Deployment: This Friday support group will help navigate unexpected changes during deployment, including extensions, shifting timelines, prolonged separation, and challenges maintaining connection. Participants must complete an intake assessment and BPSA prior to starting the group. Flyer
🌺 Military Families Baby Shower
Aloha to all expecting military families and families with babies up to 6 months old! Join the Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic for a FREE Aloha Military Families Baby Shower on Sunday, September 13 from 11:00 AM–1:00 PM in Chula Vista. 📚 Free Tutoring & Reading Support
Tutor.com visited our 3rd–5th grade students to introduce them to the FREE online tutoring available to ALL of our Hancock students! Tutor.com is also sharing a Reading Guide for families with helpful tips and strategies to support elementary-aged readers at home. Safety Update from SDPD: Local E-Bike & E-Scooter Law
Hancock’s SDPD School Safety Patrol Officer has shared an important legal update with our community. While California state law historically set no minimum age limit for lower-speed Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes, the City of San Diego recently enacted a local ordinance prohibiting children under 12 years old from operating any category of e-bike or motorized scooter. Under local law, traditional pedal bicycles and kick-scooters are the only legal riding option for children under 12. Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes require the rider to be at least 12 years old, while Class 3 e-bikes remain restricted to riders 16 and older. California state law legally mandates a fitted helmet for all riders under 18 on any bicycle or scooter. Need to Report an Absence? 🤒
Communication with our Attendance Clerk, Ms Shauna, is important if your student is absent for any reason. Per San Diego Unified Board policy, if you do not report the reason for the absence to the office within 5 school days, even if it was for an excused reason as permitted by CA Ed Code (illness, medical or dental appointments, funeral services, certain military-connected activities, etc.), it will automatically be changed to an unexcused absence. Please be sure to report the absence and the reason to the office every time. You can do this 24/7 either online or by phone @ 619-605-3200 Option 1. Our teachers cannot excuse absences, so be sure to only report absences to the front office.
