Be sure to mark your calendars and make any needed childcare arrangements for the upcoming week of minimum days. Every day during the week of March 2 - 6, our students will be dismissed at 12:15. These minimum days allow teachers to meet with families to discuss their students' 2nd grading period progress. Watch for communication from your teacher on how to schedule your time with them.

School Site Council (SSC) Parent Ballot (Please Vote)

Thank you to the one parent who stepped up to participate on our SST Committee.  Below is information on the candidate and the link to cast your vote: https://forms.gle/NzbANo9usMP9wbGT6

Veronica Johnston: I believe I could be a great candidate for the Site Council. I have been in the Navy for about 8 years. I am still currently serving. I feel like I would be a good advocate for the parents that are active duty. My orders are up at the end of 2027. I do not plan to leave so I will be here. My son that attends Hancock is special needs and I also feel like I would be a great advocate for kids with a learning difficulty. Thank you

Help Wanted

Looking for extra income? Love working with children? Hancock is looking to hire new staff members in the position of Noon Duty Supervision. You would have the responsibility of watching over students during lunch, lunch recess and assisting with car drop off and/or pick up on some days before and after school. We currently need people who can commit to work a set schedule (10hrs a week for the rest of the school year).  This is a perfect part-time job while children are in school. If you are interested, please talk to Ms. Dawn in the front office.

Phone Free School Day

As a reminder for new Hancock students and families, California (AB 3216) has joined a growing number of states that have passed laws or enacted policies regarding student cell phone use in schools. As of August 11 2025, a new "Phone-Free School Day Policy" was implemented district-wide to help students focus on learning and prioritize their mental health and well-being. Here are the key points for elementary school students:

📱 Phones: Once inside the school gates, phones must be turned off and stored out of sight, such as in a student's backpack, during the entire school day, including lunch and recess.

Other Devices: Earbuds, headphones, and smartwatches are not allowed in K-8 schools.

When Phones Are Allowed: Phones can be used before and after school, outside the gates.

🚨 Emergencies: Phones are permitted for health-related needs with a doctor's note.

📞 Need to reach your child? Please contact the school's main office to relay urgent messages.

This new policy was developed with input from students, parents, and educators. Together, we can help our students thrive! 🎒📚❤️

TK-6 Summer Enrollment

The district will offer a total of 30 days of summer programming (June 4 - July 17) for currently enrolled TK-6 students. Mark your calendars for the summer enrollment window: March 23 - 27. Families of currently enrolled TK-6 students will receive an email and text notification sent to the primary contact information on file beginning Monday, March 23, 2026 at 8:00 a.m.   Please be sure your contact information is up to date in your student’s PowerSchool account.  You can make updates through Parent Portal. If you need assistance accessing the Parent Portal, please contact our school office at 619-605-3200 or in person 7:15a - 3:15p.

K-Kids Club Literacy Drive

Hancock K-Kids Club will be holding a Literacy Drive after school on Monday, Feb. 23rd to encourage everyone to be active library users. Students can stop by our tables  to ask questions, fill out EXCEL Library Card Tickets and receive a colorful lanyard and official San Diego Public Library EXCEL card.

Hancock’s “TreeMachine”

Have you ever noticed these collection bins on the walkway leading to Hancock?  The green and white bin offers a way to give your clothes and shoes a second life. USAgain empties the “TreeMachine” on a regular schedule and 50-80% of collected clothes and shoes are worn again, keeping these items out of our landfills.  On top of that already great purpose, this collection bin is unique because USAgain, in partnership with Trees for the Future, plants a tree every time the bin is filled, which is the reason they refer to the bin on our campus as a TreeMachine!  We accept clothes, shoes, accessories and household textiles in reusable condition.  We do not accept furniture, toys, or non-textile household items. Note that leaving items outside the TreeMachine is considered dumping. Please help us keep our community clean and beautiful and do not leave items on the ground. You can always call the number on the bin if you see it’s full to arrange for the bin to be emptied. Hancock earns a small amount of money back from USAgain based on pounds of textiles collected.  You can learn more at www.usagain.com

Clothing Donations Needed for Health Office

Hancock’s Health Office often provides a change of clothes to our students who have accidents or spills. We are running quite low on clothing to loan to students. If you happen to have some children’s clothing you could donate, we especially need pants/leggings/shorts with elastic waist, underpants, and shoes.  Small sizes for our younger students are especially appreciated, but please nothing smaller than 4T. Please bring them directly to the Health Office. We appreciate your support!

Hancock 2025-2026 Yearbooks📚

If you have not already, be sure to Pre-Order Hancock’s yearbook for Grades TK - 4*. Hancock’s Online Yearbook portal is https://shop.yearbookmarket.com/hancockelementaryschool.  Prices are $24.  Last day to order will be April 29th.

*A big thank you to Hancocks’ School Safety Patrol who will be purchasing yearbooks for ALL 5th Grade students this year!  5th Grade families will not need to place an order. All 5th graders will receive yearbooks when they are delivered in the Spring.

Need to Report an Absence? 🤒

Communication with our Attendance Clerk, Ms Shauna, is important if your student is absent for any reason. Per San Diego Unified policy, if you do not report the reason for the absence to the office within 5 school days, even if it was for an excused reason (illness, medical or dental appointments, funeral services, military ceremonies, etc) it will automatically be changed to an unexcused absence. Please be sure to report the reason for the absence every time. You can do this 24/7 either online or by phone @ 619-605-3200 Option 1.
