TK/K Assessment Minimum Days Continue
TK and Kindergarten students will continue to have 12:00 p.m. minimum-day dismissals this week so that teachers can complete 1-on-1 student assessments. Please click HERE for important TK/K dismissal details.
🚸 Parking Lot Safety Update:
As we get into our routine, our top priority is making sure every student gets to and from school safely. We’ve noticed some concerning and unsafe driving behaviors in our parking lot this week. To protect our students, and to keep our parking lot open for family use, we need everyone’s full cooperation.
We also ask that you not walk through the parking lot, as this creates an unsafe environment for both pedestrians and vehicles. Please use the sidewalk on the north side of the parking lot for arrival/dismissal.
How You Can Help Keep Kids Safe:

🛑 Follow Staff & Safety Patrol: Pay close attention to Hancock staff in reflective vests and safety patrol students. Their directions keep traffic moving safely.

🐢 Slow Down & Stay Alert: Put away mobile devices and drive at a crawl through the lot.

🪧 Obey Posted Signs: Pay attention to drop-off zones, crosswalks, and no-parking areas.

🚘 Stay In Your Vehicle: Never leave your vehicle unattended during our active drop-off and pick-up times. Only pick-up or drop-off students in the zone against the curb.

Back to School Night Thurs 8/20 5:30pm
Join us for an evening designed especially for parents and guardians!
Back to School Night is happening Thursday, August 20. Gates open at 5:00 PM for our Resource Fair, followed by two classroom presentation times at 5:30 PM and 6:00 PM for families with multiple students. Meet your child’s teacher, learn about classroom expectations, routines, standards, curriculum, and connect with helpful school and community resources. We kindly ask that students remain at home, as childcare will not be available. - Flyer
Parents Needed for Two Important Committees:
Parents, we need your help! We have two very important committees at Hancock that require parent participation. The Site Governance Team (SGT) helps to provide feedback and make recommendations on school programs. The School Site Council (SSC) helps decide how to spend state and federal funds on programs and items we have at Hancock. Both committees meet on separate Mondays at 2:30, and we are currently meeting on TEAMS for both committees. The SGT needs two parent volunteers, and the SSC needs four parent volunteers. Please nominate yourself by 3pm on Monday, August 24th. The self-nomination form links are below and parents may self nominate for one or both committees:
Back to School Required Forms
Each year, our district requires student records be updated at the beginning of the school year. In years past these forms have come home with students in a packet to be returned to school. This year, we are making progress with moving to a paperless record keeping and all forms are now to be completed online. Most forms are available in the Forms tab of PowerSchool Parent Portal. Our annual Handbook is a viewable pdf with a Google Form to acknowledge you received and understand the rules. Please see the attached document with details of what to complete. A flyer will also be sent home with students as a reminder.
Safety Update from SDPD: Local E-Bike & E-Scooter Law
With the nationwide and local rise in e-bike and e-scooter usage, our SDPD School Safety Patrol Officer has shared an important legal update with our community. While California state law historically set no minimum age limit for lower-speed Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes, the City of San Diego recently enacted a local ordinance prohibiting children under 12 years old from operating any category of e-bike or motorized scooter. Under local law, traditional pedal bicycles and kick-scooters are the only legal riding option for children under 12. Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes require the rider to be at least 12 years old, while Class 3 e-bikes remain restricted to riders 16 and older. California state law legally mandates a fitted helmet for all riders under 18 on any bicycle or scooter. E-bikes and motorized scooters are legally prohibited from being ridden on pedestrian crosswalks and sidewalks near businesses. Bike Policy
Only fourth and fifth-grade students may ride bikes or scooters to school if their application form is approved by the administration team and is on file in the office. This process must be updated yearly. Safety helmets are required by state law. Bicycles and scooters are never to be ridden on school grounds. Once students pass the school sign on Taussig, they must get off their bike/scooter and walk their bike/scooter to the bike racks to ensure their own safety as well as those walking to school. Students may not ride E-bikes/E-scooters, skateboards, or rollerblades to school. Failure to follow these directions may result in the loss of bike and scooter privileges. San Diego Unified and Hancock Elementary are not responsible for damaged, lost, or stolen bicycles or scooters.

ALL Hancock students have FREE access to Tutor.com for the rest of the school year!
Students can access online tutoring and homework support at no cost to families. Next week, all of our 3rd–5th grade students will receive an in-class presentation showing them how to access and use this great resource.

Spouses/Partners Navigating Deployment: This Friday support group will help navigate unexpected changes during deployment, including extensions, shifting timelines, prolonged separation, and challenges maintaining connection. Participants must complete an intake assessment and BPSA prior to starting the group. Flyer
Parking Lot for Staff Parking Only
A reminder: the Hancock parking lot is limited to staff only. We have implemented a staff parking pass system. If you are not a staff member with a parking pass, please do not park in a spot. Please do not park in a Handicap Parking Space unless you have the appropriate placard. Cars parked without appropriate placards/plates may be cited by School Police or SDPD. Do not park, drop off, pick up, or “quickly” unload in the RESERVED spots facing the TK/K playground and garden. These are for staff members only. You will be asked to move. You may always use the drop-off/pick-up lanes to safely arrive/depart from school. More information can be found here.

Need to Report an Absence? 🤒
Communication with our Attendance Clerk, Ms Shauna, is important if your student is absent for any reason. Per San Diego Unified Board policy, if you do not report the reason for the absence to the office within 5 school days, even if it was for an excused reason as permitted by CA Ed Code (illness, medical or dental appointments, funeral services, certain military-connected activities, etc.), it will automatically be changed to an unexcused absence. Please be sure to report the absence and the reason to the office every time. You can do this 24/7 either online or by phone @ 619-605-3200 Option 1. Our teachers cannot excuse absences, so be sure to only report absences to the front office.
